Atalanta vs Juventus (2-2): Ronaldo saves the day

After Max Allegri announced earlier in the week that he would be resting key players like Cristiano Ronaldo and Miralem Pjanić many wondered if Atalanta could end the Bianconeri winning run. Certainly, they always played Juventus tough, especially under now coach Gasperini so there was a chance.

Juventus wasn’t playing spectacular football this year but no-one could deny they were very efficient. Despite scoring fewer goals than they did last year they had a remarkable streak going that saw them undefeated. A poor reaction by Atalanta’s defender in the early stages of the game predicted them to continue an undefeated run.

But it wasn’t going to be that kind of afternoon for the Bianconeri. Duvan Zapata scored a magnificent equaliser and headed in his 2nd after a corner to give Atalanta a 2-1 lead early in the second half. Rodrigo Bentancur who played stellar football recently got sent off after a reckless tackle which many as a lacklustre second yellow.

It meant that after 60 minutes of play Juventus were down 2-1 and on the way of earning their first defeat in Serie A this season. Max Allegri realized his mistakes and swiftly substituted Miralem Pjanić and Cristiano Ronaldo in which saw the Bianconeri play much better.

The team looked more confident as they played a slow build-up style patiently waiting for a mistake which they got when Ronaldo scored the equaliser late in the second half. The Bianconeri continued to play without rush and eventually scored a 3rd goal which was rightfully disallowed because of an obvious offside by Bonnuci.

The champs did drop two points but they managed to avoid their first loss which helps them sit comfortably at the top of the league. Despite being called the strongest team in Europe at the moment even they showed they were human and certainly beatable especially without their two best players playing.
